Antonio Sacchini was one of the leading composers of Italian opera seria of the late 18th century.
Oedipe à Colone, based on Sophocles’’ tragedy of the same name, was extraordinarily successful, with 583 performances at the Paris Opéra between 1787 and 1844.
-
This recording features Opera Lafayette of Washington, D.C., who also recorded Gluck’s
Orphée et Euridice for Naxos (8660185-86; UPC 0730099618526).

Of the Opera
Lafayette’s May 2005 performance of Oedipe à Colone, Joseph McLellan of the Washington Post wrote “the production was outstanding. Getchell’s voice and training are exactly right for this repertoire and Loup gave his usual flawless performance . . . It would be hard to over praise the work of music director Ryan Brown in leading the period-instrument orchestra and the excellent small chorus.”
-
The Opera Lafayette
will open its season on October 15th at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C. with a concert celebrating bass-baritone François Loup, who stars in the
Oedipe à Colone in the title role.
